About Mattresses
When you are
shopping for a mattress, it is very important to
understand the difference between support for your back,
and comfort for your body.
Support vs Comfort
They are two completely different concepts and are not
related to each other. Support is a function of the
innerspring in the bed. It is the ability of the
mattress to support the weight of the body or bodies and
not sag. The spine and the muscles around it need to
have the proper posture so that they can relax when we
are sleeping. You will toss and turn less and sleep
better with proper support. The type of support provided
by the mattress is dependent on the quality of the coil
system in the bed. Comfort is delivered to your body
through the materials on top of the coil system. It is
the mattress's ability to conform to the curves of the
body and spread out the pressure points. The lower the
pressure on your body, the less you will toss and turn
and then sleep better. What feels comfortable to one
person may feel uncomfortable to another.
Firmness
Many consumers mistakenly believe that a firm mattress
will provide better support for their back. That is not
the case. It is dependent on the innerspring inside the
mattress. If it is the same, the harder mattress would
provide no more support than the softer mattress.
Children
It is extremely important that your child sleeps on a
surface that provides adequate support. It is a mistake
to buy an inexpensive mattresses for a child. If
anything, mattress support is even more critical for a
child's growing body.
Time Spent in Bed
Since you spend approximately 1/3 of your life in your
bed, a quality mattress and boxspring is a cost
effective expenditure. With a good mattress, there will
be less tension, strain and muscle fatigue in the lower
back, allowing you to receive a better night's sleep and
waking up feeling refreshed.
Time for a New Mattress?
If you find you are not sleeping as well as you think
you should, it may be time for a new sleep set. Use the
following questions to help you determine if your sleep
set needs to be replaced:
|
•
|
Do you wake up with pain, stiffness
and soreness? |
|
•
|
Does your mattress shows visible
signs of wear and tear? |
|
•
|
Did you had a better night's sleep
somewhere other than your own bed? |
|
•
|
Do you roll into the center of the
bed? |
|
•
|
Does your boxspring sag on the edges
or are there any visible broken parts? |
|
•
|
Does your bed wobble when you sit on
it? |
The Bed
Frame
A quality frame provides sufficient support for the
mattress and boxspring. It helps to minimize the the
sagging common with inferior beds and frames. Most
squeaks are caused by the frame or the place where the
frame attaches to the headboard and footboard.
